The Crozet Gators Swim Team welcomes Kevin Boyd as our new Head Coach. This position may be new for Kevin, but the Crozet Gators are not. Kevin has been an assistant coach and/or swim team parent of the Crozet Gators since 2005, and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. Kevin began his swimming career with the Dynamo Swim Club in Atlanta, Georgia and continued to compete while attending the College of Charleston in South Carolina. His coaching experience dates back to 1991, where he started as head coach with the Mt. Vernon Woods Summer Swim Team in Atlanta, Georgia for 6 years. He continued as a swim instructor until his move to Charlottesville in 2005. Since then, he has been a swim coach with the Charlottesville Youth Aquatics Center (CYAC), the local YMCA team and a regular fixture on the Crozet Gator deck during the summers. He is a certified American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) level 2 coach. Kevin has been a lecturer and instructor in German since 1998 and is expected to graduate from the University of Virginia with a Ph.D in German in June of this year. He is married and has three young children. When not poolside, Kevin enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding and traveling.
Don "Doc" Remaly Assistant Head Coach
Doc has recently stepped down from his 6 year reign as head coach of the Crozet Gators Swim Team, but will remain on deck (and in the pool) part-time, helping our young swimmers become successful, confident swimmers. He brings over 20 years of coaching experience and is a certified ASCA (American Swim Coaches Association) Level 5 Coach; the highest professional level recognized. Doc began his swimming career with his summer league in Harrisburg, PA when he was 9 years old. He became a Division III All-American swimmer while attending Johns Hopkins University. While practicing family medicine in Bloomsburg, PA, he served as the volunteer head coach of the Bloomsburg Area YMCA (BAY) Barracudas, guiding them over 16 years to numerous state team championships and multiple YMCA National titles in both individual and relay events. He also coached two BAY swimmers at the 2000 Olympic team trials. In 1997, he was voted the National YMCA Coach of the Year. After moving to the Charlottesville area in 2003, he joined the YMCA coaching staff and continues to serve as the Head Coach of the CYAC YMCA team. He is also an assistant coach for the University of Virginia men's and women's swim team and practices medicine part-time. He and his wife have raised three children, who were all competitive swimmers. Doc's favorite pastimes when not coaching are gardening, reading, boating, and tending to his salt water aquariums.
Patricia Deale Assistant Coach Patricia is in her third year as a Crozet Gators Swim Coach. Prior to this, she was a lifeguard and swim instructor at the pool and a Crozet Gators swimmer for 9 years. Her younger sister, Caroline, continues to swim on the team, and both of her parents are active volunteers. Patricia graduated from WesternAlbemarleHigh School in 2008, played basketball all 4 years, ran cross country 2 years and was a founding member of the rowing club. She is currently attending Radford University where she is seeking a degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Special Education. While at Radford she works as a lifeguard and a peer mentor. She is the president of the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, loves to read, exercise, watch college football and basketball, take pictures, watch movies, and spend time with friends.
Daniel Corley Assistant Coach
Daniel was a long time Crozet Gator swimmer and a Gator coach in 2009. Daniel joined the Gator swim team at the age of 5, swimming on the team for 14 years before he graduated from Western Albemarle High School in 2008. He also spent his summers as a lifeguard, assistant manager, and swim instructor at the Crozet Pool. His younger sister, Anna, continues to swim on the team, and his mother has been a long time active member of the team. Daniel’s was also a year-round swimmer with the YMCA facilities in Charlottesville and Waynesboro and a high school swimmer with the Western Albemarle High School team all 4 years. Daniel graduated from Lincoln College in Illinois with an associated degree in 2011. He swam both years, was captain and MVP for the 2009-2010 season. He is currently attending the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in Biology and continues to swim with captain status.
Frannie Carey Assistant Coach
Frannie is a first year coach with the Crozet Gators. She is from Lynchburg, Virginia and started swimming competitively with her summer team at the Boonsboro County Club at the age of 6. She swam with her summer team until she was 18 years old, was a winter swimmer for 2 years with the Lynchburg YMCA, attended the UVA summer camp, and swam for E.C. Glass High School all four years. She qualified for States her sophomore and junior years and with a 7th place finish in backstroke he sophomore year. She coached at Boosboro County Club and is has been a volunteer coach with the CYAC YMCA winter swimming team in Charlottesville this past year. She is presently a second year student at the University of Virginia and is majoring in Latin American Studies.
Charles Walcott Volunteer Assistant Coach
Charles is a first time coach with the Crozet Gators and will be volunteering his time with us this summer, so make sure to give him a special thank you when you see him. Charles is originally from Texas. After high school, he joined the Navy and became a Search and Rescue Swimmer. After the Navy, he returned home and attended college at Angelo State University for both undergrad and grad school where he studied Kinesiology /Exercise Science. He worked as a Lifeguard during his time at ASU and later served as the Graduate Assistant of the Aquatics program. While at school, he met his wife Valerie and they now have 4 children: Josiah, Emma, Ezra, and Miriam. They moved to Charlottesville in 2007 after Charles accepted a position at the University of Virginia in the Intramural Rec Sports Department. He teaches swimming classes for both the Intramural Rec Sports Department and the Lifetime Physical Activity program. He is a certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine, enjoys swimming and teaching others competitive stroke mechanics. He and his family live in Crozet, Va.
Alex Rayle Assistant Coach (5-6 year old swimmers)
Alex will be coaching our 6 and under swimmers this season. He is a rising junior at Western Albemarle High School, and is a member of the high school swim team. He recently placed in the Top 16 in all of his events and relays at the 2011 Virginia High School League swimming state championships. He belongs to SMAC, a year round YMCA swim team in Waynesboro, where he has competed for 8 years. He is a YMCA national qualifier, and a Virginia age group champion. Alex began swimming as a Crozet Gator at the age of 7 and has been a junior coach for the for past 4 years. He also was an assistant coach with the Stray Cats Swim Team in Waynesboro. Alex's love of teaching children has also prompted him to be a swim lessons instructor for the past few years when he is not coaching. Alex enjoys working with kids and is very excited to work with the youngest members of the Crozet Gators this season.
Jacob Lescault Assistant Coach (5-6 year old swimmers)
Jacob will also be coaching our 6 and under swimmers this summer. This is Jacob's first year as an assistant coach, however he has volunteered as a junior coach the past 2 summers. Jacob has been a JSL swimmer for 6 years and a Crozet Gator swimmer the past 2 years. He is a senior swimmer on the CYAC swim team and his favorite events are the 400 IM, 200 back, 200 fly, and the distance frees.To say that Jacob loves the sport of swimming is an understatement.He is a certified life guard and feels that for safety purposes everyone should know how to swim.A former home school student, Jacob is currently a rising junior at Albemarle High School with an interest in architecture, engineering or maybe even medicine. When not at the pool or in school Jacob enjoys reading, drawing, building things, and taking care of his pet rabbit. His philosophy is that swimming is a life sport and the lessons you learn from being an athlete go far beyond the health benefits that swimming provides.Jacob is very excited about working with young swimmers to help them improve their stroke technique and hopefully instill in them the same joy he gets from the great sport of swimming.
